Our story begins with the announcement of Valerie's pregnancy. She and her mom, Carol, went to a national arts & crafts chain to pick out yarn and a pattern for a baby blanket. They bought yarn marketed and sold as baby yarn. Carol eagerly cast on her stitches and started to make the blanket. Immediately, wisps of the yarn began to break off and float in the air. When Carol told Warren, her son about this, they began to wonder if the baby could some how breathe those little wisps in or ingest tufts of the stuff when the baby inevitably chews on the blanket. Warren suggested using 100% wool or cotton, preferably organic to make the blanket. We returned to the arts & crafts chain store. Nearly all the yarn, whether cotton or wool, was blended with at least one man-made fiber. We turned our search to the Internet and finally found Blue Sky Alpacas 100% organic cotton yarn. This search was not easy and it took a lot of dead-end tries going through the search results from a major search engine.
